How’s the weather?!? We knew we were taking a risk having our Annual Show so late in the year in December, but we considered the risk of a heat wave, and having to postpone due to our Hot Weather Policy; not be threatened by rain. But there were a few moments in the day of Sunday December 8th that clouds started to close in and we thought we were going to have to run for cover; otherwise we couldn’t have asked for a more glorious day to hold The Side Saddle Association of South Australia’s Annual Side Saddle Show.
To add to the glorious weather; a fantastic choice had been made to hold the show at the McLaren Vale Recreation Grounds in the Pony Club faculties located on Main Road, McLaren Flat; with a record number of rider entries of 14 horses and 15 riders from all over the SA, and one rider with her horse travelling over from Victoria to compete; and many spectators not only supporters of the club and riders, but also passersby who thought it a worthwhile event to drop in and see what the fuss was about.
Our Association encourages horse and rider of any age, ability, and discipline to have a go at side saddle; with the belief of many that it is insecure and hard to stay on; they are wrong, and the best way to find out is by having a go.
Over the day there were 18 events held which catered for every skill level with Novice Rider and Maiden Mount included, and every rider age group from Tiny Tot Rider to Mature Age Rider. The program also included diversity to the usual show classes; there was dressage, a game of Champagne Challenge, and Australian and European period costume classes judged as Junior and Senior separately.
The day was ended with the presentation of perpetual trophies from riders’ achievement over the day’s competitions and a few extra special awards as well as raffle prize draws, announcement of winners for the silent auction, and of course thanks and presentation of gifts to the two important people of the day; the judges, Cheryl Hatswell judging the show classes, and Robyn Stokes judging the dressage classes.
Not only was this year’s show a great success with the record number of entries and attendees; but outstanding sponsorship was received by supporters of our group, and sponsor packs were handed out to all attendees at the show which contained information that was supplied for all of our sponsors to ensure The Association is doing what it can to show its appreciation. So our aim is to be able to present a show to the same standard if not better in 2014, and we hope to see as many people there as possible!
